Press Releases & Angle Development

By carishane

The 21st Century has given us what our PR forefathers and foremothers prayed for: media moments that can be resurrected as often as the whim strikes: to coincide with a company campaign, a trend (# trending social media story), marketing event, a Hallmark holiday, another PR moment, a “fill-in-the-blank here.” A press release is about organic SEO, messaging, differentiation and pitch development. I’ve written about the power of PR often: One of my favorite pieces was published in the Huffington Post, “In the Age of Social Media, why PR should matter to businesses, large and small.”

Below are links to releases published to the wire services on behalf of clients. The success of these releases were the key angles I designed based on conversations with clients; the information I pulled from owners and CEO’s I spun into interesting concepts that whet the appetites of editors and producers. Again, the most important part of any release or pitch is the angle — without an angle, there is no story. Check out the angles devised below on these releases posted to the wire service.

40-years in business makes Sylene of Washington a witness to social change, model of business success.

News organizations don’t often write about businesses celebrating anniversaries (with exceptions), so this pitch angle was based on a fantastic conversation with the owner of the store who, during a pitch angle meeting, told me fabulous stories about how her customers and business had changed as the world around her changed. Read the release. Screen Shot 2016-01-07 at 6.22.22 PM

The debut of the company’s 3D printer coincided with an educational event in Boston, so I went with an education angle that focused on their specialized design was ripe for students and classroom use. Read the release here.

Editing: Fiction, Non-fiction, OpEds, White papers …

Editing should be an on-going, collaborative process with different stages that are intended to provide the author with professional feedback for his/her work. Many authors work with editors as part of a three-step process that begins before they have even begun writing: Step one: Planning stage Step two: While writing Step three: Once the manuscript […]

What’s your point?

When you write, no matter what you write, make a point. For “essential writing lessons,” it’s hard to top an on-point piece in CommPro.com, written by New York University’s Don Bates. In it he tells two anecdotes, one by the great essayist, humorist and filmmaker Nora Ephron; the other by a professor who helps academics write so the general public can […]
